Who We Are

Defenders Coalition Somalia/ Somaliland was established in August 2015 in Hargeisa as the Coalition of Human Rights Defenders Somalia/Somaliland. Operating across Somalia and Somaliland, we are the first nationally based non-governmental organization (NGO) dedicated to the protection and promotion of human rights defenders (HRDs).

We work to ensure that HRDs can work safely, in solidarity, and with dignity. Since our founding, we have brought together individual defenders and organizations under one umbrella, building a national movement to confront risks, respond to threats, and create a more enabling environment for human rights work.

Vision

A Somalia and Somaliland where HRDs live and work in an enabling environment that respects and protects human rights for all.

Mission

To safeguard and amplify the voices of HRDs in Somalia and Somaliland through protection, capacity building, and advocacy.

Our Work

Our efforts focus on four core areas:

  • Capacity Building: strengthening the skills, resilience, and security awareness of HRDs.
  • Advocacy: amplifying HRD voices, challenging restrictive laws, and promoting progressive policy reforms.
  • Protection: working with human rights defenders to address their security and safety needs by linking them with resources and support.
  • Solidarity: fostering unity among HRDs and connecting them to national, regional, and international mechanisms so no defender stands alone.
